ICSHL begins 50th season as Sun Valley edges Penncrest

The Inter-County Scholastic Hockey League began its fiftieth season last night as the Sun Valley Vanguards traveled to the Skatium to take on the Penncrest Lions in the league opener.

With 6:06 remaining in the first period, Penncrest was called for too many men on the ice give Sun Valley the extra attacker. A minute later Gavin McGinnis put the puck past Lions’ netminder John Mundy to give the Vanguards a 1 – 0 lead.

Shane Kokoska beat Vanguards goalie Ryan Duffield at 4:46 into the second period to tie the game at one.

Sun Valley would take the lead after scoring two goals in just nineteen seconds apart. Nate McGinnis would give the Vanguards a 2 – 1 at 6:42 into the middle stanza then Joseph Bonacquisti made it 3 – 1 with 13 minutes remaining in the second period.

The Lions would cut their deficit in half when Parker King scored a powerplay goal just nineteen seconds with the man advantage. Ian McDougall would tie the game at the 8:30 mark of the second period.

Sun Valley would take the lead for good when Nate McGinnis scored his second goal of the game with 6:02 remaining in regulation.

Duffield stopped 23 of 26 shots in the win while Mundy turned aside 20 of 24 shots. Click here for the box score.
