Like many schools in the tri-state region, Haverford High was closed due to election day. However, instead of sleeping in late or simply relaxing on their off day, the boys’ varsity ice hockey team visited St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children where the team donated over 90 stuff animals to patients throughout the medical wing.

“We’ve been collecting bears at the Skatium for a while” stated Haverford Ice Hockey Club President Drew Simcox. “We had drop-off bins located in the arena and anyone who wanted to donate a bear could. We in turn wanted to give back to the community so we donated them to St. Christopher’s” said Simcox.

Over twenty-one players, two coaches and parents went into Philadelphia to visit patients who were either significantly younger or approximately the same age as the team’s players. Wearing their red jerseys, the team was divided into groups of four with each group visiting many rooms.

“Some of the older patients felt slightly awkward about receiving a stuff animal from visitors close their age” said Haverford’s league representative Karen Daly. “But when the nurses told some of the girls that they were from the boys varsity ice hockey team and that they were cute, they were more than willing to receive an animal” laughed Daly.

“As a parent, it gives me great pleasure watching the boys do this on their off day” stated Daly. “While we love watching them play and succeed on the ice and in the classroom, it is an even better feeling to watch them grow as responsible adults. I think the boys that that today” concluded Daly.
