Monday’s boys’ varsity game recaps: East and Stoga win in OT

WC Bayard Rustin 2 @ Downingtown East 3 - OT
Mark Stankiewicz scored at 1:17 into overtime to give Downingtown East a 3 – 2 win over WC Bayard Rustin. After a scoreless first period, the Knights would take a 2 – 0 lead. Cougars forward Ryan Prestayko was called for tripping at 5:15 into the second to give Rustin the man advantage. Nicholas Ferraro would score a powerplay goal to give the Knights a 1 – 0 at the 6:56 mark of the middle stanza. Two minutes later Matt Owens would double the Knights lead. With four minutes left in the second period, Prestayko would score his eighth goal on the season to cut the Cougars’ deficit to one. Carter Vela – who had an assist on Prestayko’s goal – scored his first goal on the season to tie the game at two at the halfway point of the third period. After the regulation ended tied at two, Stankiewicz scored to win it in overtime from assists from Theo Vela and Dan Stankiewicz. Matt Shandler stopped 26 of 28 shots while Joel Keller turned aside 17 of 20. Box score.

Conestoga 4 @ Strath Haven 3 – OT
Will Schnorr scored with less than a minute remaining in overtime to give Conestoga a 4 – 3 overtime win over Strath Haven. The victory moves the Pioneers into first place in the Central division. Trailing 3 – 2 with 53 seconds left in the game, Stoga’s Frank Konopasek scored his second goal of the game to even the score and send it to overtime to setup Schnorr’s heroics.  Bobby Albertson also hit the back of the net for the Pioneers. Ryan Spanier, Josh Peabody and Brett Miller scored for Strath Haven. 

Salesianum 2 @ Archbishop Ryan 1
Patrick Kelly scored his third goal on the season to give the Sallies a 1 – 0 lead at the 6:39 mark of the opening period. With one second remaining in the first, Logan Downs scored a powerplay goal to give the Sallies a 2 – 0 lead. CJ Perkins would score his twentieth goal on the season to cut Ryan’s deficit in half mid-way through the second but Graham Burke made the save he had to make to secure the win for the Sallies. Burke stopped 23 of 24 shots in the win while Kevin Flynn turned aside 19 of 21. Box score.

Father Judge 9 @ Delaware Military Academy 6
Thomas Scannell scored four goals and Sean Melso added two to lead the Crusaders to a 9 – 6 win over DMA. Aidan Danese and Max Ruggerio each scored for the Seahawks (Delaware Hockey Night).

Ridley 0 @ Lower Merion 5

Penncrest 2 @ Lower Merion 5
Schuyler Dillon (2 goals), Alex Broder (1 goal and 1 assist) and Alex Crane (1 goal and 1 assist) each had two points to lead the Aces to a 5 – 2 win over Penncrest. Daniel Kratz also hit the back of the net for the Aces. After being down 5 – 0, Sean Smolcynski and Ben Samano scored late third period goals for the Lions. Lower Merion’s goaltenders combined to stop 20 of 22 shots while John Mundy turned aside 29 of 34 shots in defeat. Box score.

Bishop Shanahan 0 @ Boyertown 10
Jake Hartman had four points (2 goals and 2 assists) and Jackson Novak had three points (1 goal and 2 assists) while seven other Bears scored to lead Boyertown to a 10 – 0 win. Derek Baradgie got the shutout.

Penncrest 1 @ Haverford 3
Daniel Morris scored two goals and teammate Daniel Mariani hit the back of the net to lead the Fords to a 3 – 1 win over Penncrest. Corey Anderson lite the lamp for the Lions lone goal. Tyler Cassidy turned aside 12 of 13 shots while John Mundy turned aside 39 of 42. Box score.

Salesianum 1 @ WC East 2
Salesianum took a 1 – 0 lead just twenty-one seconds into the game on an even-strength goal by Johnny Lee. With 3:05 remaining in the first period, the Sallies were called tripping to give the Vikings the man advantage.  Thirty-eight seconds later Cole Soster tied the game at one with assists from Jack Hamilton and Nick Castura. After a scoreless second, Castura would score the game winner with nineteen seconds remaining to give WC East the 2 – 1 win. Joey Galitski stopped 14 of 15 shots in the win while Graham Burke was spectacular in defeat turning aside 60 of 62 shots. Box score.
